Thriving in a complex world

The world appears to be getting more complex… or is this simply the viewpoint of a now thirty- something guy, balancing a young family, business, training schedule, social life, and all its expectations? I often wonder what my life would look like if I hadn’t pursued a career inside the walls of a gym all those years ago. Would I train daily? Would I actively eat healthy? Who would I hang around with, and what would I value? These questions have occupied my thoughts, especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced us all to reflect on how we spend our time.

Amidst the chaos, one thing is clear: Western society often fails to promote useful information when it comes to health. Were bombarded with quick fixes, trends, detoxes, and hacks, yet nothing seems to stick. The weight doesn’t change, lingering pains persist, and stress remains unmanaged. It’s information overload.

So, what’s the answer? Keep it simple. Less is more. Start with the minimum. This approach keeps my life in check, and I’m going to explain how.

Human beings are far more complex than we may ever understand. The biopsychosocial model attempts to explain the multitude of reasons behind outcomes like injury or weight gain. But amidst this complexity, simplicity reigns supreme. Here’s how I simplify:

Sleep: Despite a demanding schedule and two young children, prioritizing sleep is non-negotiable. When fatigue sets in, it’s time to focus on sleep hygiene. Communication with my partner and colleagues sets the stage for support. Then, practical steps like setting a non-negotiable bedtime and establishing a pre-bed routine ensure restful sleep. For those struggling to stay asleep, simple adjustments to daily habits can make a world of difference.

Nutrition: Periodically, dissatisfaction prompts a reevaluation of my nutrition habits. The solution? Identify the easiest path to realign eating habits swiftly. Whether it’s ensuring pre and post-workout meals or eliminating nightly indulgences, simplicity reigns supreme. By replacing negative habits with positive ones and maintaining consistency, long-term health and vitality are achievable.

Motivation: Rather than relying on fleeting motivation, I’ve embraced an identity mantra: “I train and live well every day, so I can be me.” This mindset shift acknowledges the role of habits in shaping our lives. By aligning our environment with our goals and recognizing the power of small,
consistent actions, we can overcome the allure of shortcuts and stay on track toward our aspirations.

In a world inundated with complexity, simplicity emerges as a guiding principle for optimal health and well-being. By focusing on small, actionable steps and maintaining consistency, we can navigate life’s challenges with greater ease. So, I invite you to embrace simplicity in your health journey—start with one habit, master it, and watch as it transforms into a foundation for lasting change. And remember, for any significant health concerns, seek professional guidance. Here’s to simplicity and sustainability in pursuit of our best selves.

As the famous physical therapist, Dr Kelly Starrett says “Show me you can be consistent, then we will talk about you being heroic.”

Thanks for your time.
